Robert D. Stevens, Ph.D., P.E., AICP, Pres. 15. ASCE
Robert D. Stevens, Ph.D., P.E., AICP, Pres. 15. ASCE, has been an active ASCE member since he was a student at The University of Akron. Through his early ASCE involvement, Bob gained leadership skills and confidence that helped shape his professional life.
With a global career spanning over 50 years, Bob worked primarily in the transportation sector where he led environmental assessments, planning, design, and construction management of roads, bridges, rail, transit, and airport projects. He is an ASCE President-Emeritus, a past President of the United Engineering Foundation (UEF) and works part-time as an Executive Vice President at Arcadis.
Bob has been in many volunteer leadership roles, including serving as a founding governor and officer of ASCE's Transportation and Development Institute, Chair of the ASCE Technical Region Board of Governors, and a member of the ASCE Board of Direction. Being involved and giving back to the civil engineering profession as a volunteer, and philanthropist, helps Bob spread his message that civil engineering “is a wonderful profession…[that] offers so many opportunities to grow in new directions.”
Throughout his career, Bob has been an ambassador for the civil engineering profession – meeting and talking with members of the public, students and society at large, educating them about the role civil engineers play in protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public.
“I’ve had a great career that has been both fulfilling and meaningful. Civil engineers do more than any other profession to keep people safe and healthy by providing clean drinking water, proper waste disposal and treatment, and safe transportation systems. We prevent problems while other professions treat problems after people experience them. It is a wonderful people-serving profession.”
Bob is a member of the ASCE Foundation Founder Society and Pacesetter Circle and recently made a generous donation to support the Foundation Sustainable Development Initiatives Fund to support ASCE programs focused on sustainability, resilience, and infrastructure. Bob serves as the Chair of the Sustainability Supporters Campaign Committee and hopes that he is setting an example for others to follow and will also support ASCE Sustainable Development Initiatives.
“ASCE sustainability programs provide critical guidance and resources for engineers to develop and refine the knowledge and skills needed to build the sustainable and resilient infrastructure of the future. Charitable contributions to the ASCE Foundation’s Sustainable Development Initiative help make these programs possible. I believe so strongly in the value of the [these programs] that I’ve made a personal contribution to support it.”
